Just What is Reclaimed Wood?

Reclaimed wood flooring is produced from wood that would typically end up in a landfill or burned or disposed of in some other manner. As we demolish bridges, barns, old building, industrial structures, etc. the wood in these structures are typically just disposed of in the landfills and of use to no one.

Someone thought that there must be a much higher and better use for this wood that was just being disposed of, and they were right on the mark!

Many recycling companies have profited from taking this old wood, repairing it, milling it and cutting it into planks. They then market this reclaimed wood to prospective homeowners for new and existing home uses. There are many options that are available to the homebuyer, including many wood species, options and finish options.

Normally because this wood would be disposed in a landfill, it is reclaimed, it is considered a notable sustainable source. It's gives new life to an old product and that's just about as green as you can get!

When people choose to use reclaimed wood, less trees need to be cut down to provide for the flooring needs of today's home and building owners.

This reclaimed wood is typically of much higher quality than comparable new wood flooring. Old-growth hardwood typically came from virgin forests with very large trees that had a large quantity of quality wood. Also the longer a tree grows the stronger is the wood that is produced. That makes this wood flooring extremely long-lasting.

What is the Cost of Reclaimed Wood Flooring?

Reclaimed wood flooring costs vary quite a bit, depending on the species of wood you select and the grade and level of finish, which is much the same as traditional wood flooring. Most likely you will not pay any additional for this reclaimed wood flooring than you would for similar species new wood flooring.

Costs for reclaimed wood materials you are likely to see are between $3.50 and $7.00 per square foot. Because it installs similar to a traditional wood floor, installing a reclaimed wood floor is ideal for the do-it-yourself homeowner.

Considerations of Reclaimed Wood Flooring:

There may be marks or imperfections in this wood as it has been used before. Manufacturers typically mill the wood and prepare it for flooring use, but the imperfections remain. It is thought that these marks and imperfections give the wood character and actually becomes a selling point for the flooring.

When you select your stain and finish products for your flooring, take care to pick low VOC products. If the products you use to finish your floor have high levels of VOC's, you will experience off-gassing of the volatile organic compounds for many years.
